Dr Ralph Gourlay is the Director of Surgery at Calvary Mater Hospital. He is the Supervisor of Surgical Training and has over 20 years experience in Breast and General Surgery. He is appointed at Hunter Breast Screen and Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and has been involved with Breast Cancer Clinical Trials for 22 years. 

He set up the original multidisciplinary breast cancer clinics in the Hunter and is an active member of the multidisciplinary team meetings now. 

He studied at University of Newcastle and graduated with Honours. He then had international training in leading breast units in Cardiff Wales and Sheffield England. In 2013 Dr Gourlay was a finalist in the Alumni awards in the category of Regional Leadership. 

Over the last 5 years Dr Gourlay has pursued further training in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery and has introduced these techniques to The Calvary Mater and his private practice and has been a strong advocate for making breast reconstruction much more widely available in our community.

He also is a senior specialist with appointments to Newcastle Melanoma Unit and Newcastle Endoscopy Centre and is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle.

He is available to see patients with Breast Cancer at our Stewart Avenue Rooms.





Dr Owen Morris completed specialist training in Breast Reconstruction in Manchester, England, in one of the pre-eminent units in Europe, The Nightingale Centre. It is the regional referral centre for complex breast reconstructions in the North West of England, and is a leader in innovative reconstruction techniques. Dr Morris is a locally trained surgeon and Australian citizen, having moved to Australia after completing his primary medical degree at St. George's Hospital, London.

Dr Morris has a keen interest in academia, and was awarded the John Lowenthal Scholarship for his Masters Degree in Surgery (Plastics and Reconstruction subspeciliaty) in 2012. Dr Morris has many research articles published in high-impact journals, and has presented peer-reviewed papers at both national and international meetings. In 2008 he was awarded the Royal Australian College of Surgeons John Ham Medal for his research.

Dr Morris is an enthusiastic educator of undergraduates, and since 2008 has held the position of Conjoint Educational Fellow with the Department of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle.

Dr Morris has recently been appointed to the role of Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Calvary Mater Hospital, and therefore is pleased to offer both public and private appointments for breast oncology, benign breast disease, and breast reconstruction referrals (including both implant-based and flap reconstruction). Dr Morris specialises in immediate one-stage reconstruction, pre-pectoral techniques, and risk-reducing surgery for breast cancer gene carriers. Dr Morris will not be fostering a cosmetic breast practice.

Dr Morris is also a General Surgeon, and is accredited by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia to perform gastroscopies and colonoscopies.
